This 65’ catamaran is getting some new engines! This 65’ catamaran is getting some new engines! Since the work starts beforehand to decommission the engines, we will frequently tow a boat round trip to the yard and back. The old engines will get pulled out and new engines get dropped in before we tow the boat back to the home slip for the installation process to get finished.
First photo taken by Dennis Merryman. Sunday afte First photo taken by Dennis Merryman. Sunday afternoon, during a high surf event, a call was placed over the VHF radio from a Good Samaritan advising he was towing a disabled dingy but the line he was using to tow had snapped and the dingy with two people on board was now drifting into the surf. Shortly after, he advised the two people had ended up in the water. Ventura County Harbor Patrol responded and, with the help of surfers, recovered both victims out of the water and transported them for medical assessment. We responded by land and recovered the vessel off of the beach and later delivered it to a repair shop. There are certainly some learning opportunities from this situation. The use of a VHF marine radio allows the distress transmission to be heard by many at the same time to create an immediate response versus a phone call going to just one which then has to be relayed to others. Check the weather before you go out and always maintain a safe distance offshore to allow time to react such as to deploy an anchor. Lastly remember that Harbor Patrol & TowBoatUS are standing by 24/7 to assist in emergency and non-emergency situations. Even if you might have the situation under control, these trained professionals would rather be cancelled en route about a disabled boat versus being dispatched to a vessel in the surf with victims in the water.

We hope everyone is getting a chance to relax afte We hope everyone is getting a chance to relax after the holidays, just like our Captains after completing this 35 hour tow! This 41’ sailboat ran out of wind and their motor wouldn’t start up near Point Conception. With a mid-trip resupply from a towboat responding to a different case, the Captains got this member back to his home slip in Long Beach.
This just-purchased 24’ sailboat was trying to m This just-purchased 24’ sailboat was trying to motor from Marina Del Rey to Channel Islands Harbor when they experienced strong winds and started having engine issues. Because of numerous issues and for the safety of the 2 adults and 2 kids on board, the Coast Guard was notified of the situation and Station Channel Islands as well as a helicopter responded. The Coast Guard small boat arrived on scene and ensured the mariners would be ok for the addition couple minutes for us to arrive and get the vessel in tow. They endured strong winds and big waves for the 18 mile tow back into the harbor. Once into the harbor, 12 hours after departing Marina Del Rey, they were assessed, treated, and released for minor hypothermia and seasickness by Channel Islands Harbor Patrol, @oxnardcityfire and @amrventura
This could have ended up being a much worse situation! PLEASE check the weather before you leave: There has been a small craft advisory in place all day. The BoatUS app is a great tool to quickly check weather and see if any advisories are in place. Also, make sure your vessel is equipped for a long distance trip like this one before you head out. This vessel did not have navigational lights or radar and would be cutting it on daylight hours even if they had no issues.
